Buzzetti and Stepanian Split Wins at Willow Springs

Saturday’s qualifying kicked off with a blazing lap time set by Michael Mihld to claim his first pole position of the season. His lap time was 1.3 seconds faster than the nearest driver. Alan Hauser qualified second with Hubert Young fast on his heels in third. Joining the Spec E30 ranks for his first race was Ed Wagner, who was new to this bunch, but no stranger to automobile racing. Wagner comes to us after competing in the Cadillac Challenge.
With no surprise after his qualifying effort, Mihld got out to a large lead where he found himself all alone for most of the race. Charles Buzzetti and Young battled it out for the second spot for the first third of the race. Young finally broke away from Buzzetti and challenged Mihld for the lead. Two Podiums for Atteberry at Willow Springs

Willow Springs International Raceway brands itself as the “Fastest Road in the West.” No argument there. 944 Spec racing March 12 and 13 certainly confirmed it. When one competitor expressed surprise at how much fuel he was using, I told him it’s because we spent most of the time with the pedal mashed to the floor. Then he proceeded to go out and win the next race. Whether it was the insanely high speed at which you can enter Turn 1, the full throttle around 180 degrees of banking in Turn 2, the excitement of driving straight uphill then pitching the car and going straight downhill like a roller coaster in Turn 4, the full throttle while going downhill through Turn 8, or the “oh #@%!” moments around Turn 9, Willow Springs International Raceway did not disappoint.

The Darkest Road in the West – The Western Endurance Racing Championship kicks off 2016 at Willow Springs International Raceway

The Western Endurance Racing Championship series regularly visits Buttonwillow Raceway, Thunderhill Raceway and even the Utah Motorsports Campus in Tooele, Utah, but it hasn’t held an event at Willow Springs International Raceway in nearly a decade. Willow Springs is difficult enough during the daytime, but at night? Only the bravest need apply.
Five of Willow Springs’ nine turns are some of the fastest in the country and Rosamond, Calif., is so far from civilization that when the sun dips behind the ridge to the west, it gets dark. Really dark.
Still, 17 teams signed up for the kickoff event, a three-hour race on Friday evening. To make things even more interesting, El Niño brought in showers for Friday afternoon practice and dumped more rain during the race.
