KC Cook and Chris Nunes on Top in Spec Miata at Auto Club Speedway

When NASA SoCal headed to Auto Club Speedway in advance of the midsummer break in the region’s schedule, Blake Minasian was firmly in the lead of the points chase. Lap times at Auto Club Speedway typically cluster tighter than other tracks in the region, so the racing tends to be more competitive. Add in the importance of the draft and the stakes escalate. On Saturday, Spec MX-5 Cup driver Chris Nunes grabbed pole position, with KC Cook in second, Anthony Zarcone in third and Blake Minasian in fourth. At the start, Cook and Minasian made the most of the draft and pushed each other into the top two spots by the time they reached Turn 3, the entrance to the infield portion of the track. Nunes shoe-horned his way into third past Anthony Santos and the front three broke away. Later in the race, as Nunes headed into the braking […]

NASA SoCal Spec Miata Drivers Raise $500 for Local Food Share Program

The Southern California Region’s Spec Miata drivers raised $250 to be donated to a local Food Share program, and with matching funds from NASA SoCal Regional Director Mike Collins, brought the total to $500. SoCal Spec Miata series leader popped in to drop off the donation with Jenifer Caldwell, Ventura County Food Share’s chief development officer in June. “The reality is that many Americans are just one job loss or medical crisis away from food insecurity,” Caldwell said in a company video. “Even before the pandemic, roughly 75,000 or one in six Ventura County residents were considered food insecure. The vast majority of those are low-wage working individuals and families for whom illness, an unexpected expense or a steady-job loss means financial hardship that can rapidly lead to a struggle to put food on the table.” According to Food Share, they can turn $10 into three meals for needy local […]

WERC Racers Dash Into the Dark at Willow Springs Raceway in May

Willow Springs Intl. Raceway and Buttonwillow Raceway have at least one thing in common: They’re both in the middle of nowhere, and when the sun dips below the horizon, it gets dark. Really dark. They’re so far out in the boonies, there isn’t even any light pollution — at least until the WERC series shows up! Both tracks are challenging in their own ways. Dropping tires off at Buttonwillow produces dust so thick it can be deadly to cars. At least two WERC cars were totaled at Buttonwillow in April. Willow Springs’ primary challenge is that it is one of the fastest tracks in the country, with average lap speeds of more than 80 mph, even for momentum cars. Couple high speeds with low light and you are in for a challenging evening, which is exactly what 33 WERC drivers came for in May. E0 Team BMW Z4 driver and […]
